Interview with Kayla Casteel, fitness trainer and owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: After preparing to be a personal trainer by getting my exercise science degree, interning in related fields and spending some time in the fitness industry, I realized that there was a lack of education and practical application among the fitness community. Many of them get their certifications over a weekend seminar and have no previous experience, which can lead to poor technique and coaching, and, ultimately, more misinformation and injuries. I realized that if I wanted to follow my passion and values and have a career as a trainer, I needed to start my own business.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: The general population is either overweight, sedentary or has previous injuries and conditions that may prevent them from successfully integrating into a fitness program. Why then do most fitness facilities supply programming designed for fit populations? Balanced Training Fitness incorporates mobility, stability and technique work into a progressive program designed for anyone looking to start a fitness program. This means learning to move well and perform basic movements with good technique and resolving any problem areas (such as tight hips, a weak core, etc.), before taking on more complex exercises. This way, our clients are able to continue their individualized program without injury for the long term, and ultimately see better results as they learn to move their bodies more efficiently.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love seeing my clients gain confidence as they tackle the things that they never thought they would be able to do. I enjoy watching them transform mentally and physically as their whole attitude toward fitness and health changes.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The general public is not well-educated on a lot of fitness topics and not able to differentiate between a poor fitness program and a high-quality one. Unfortunately, our biggest challenge is establishing our value and showing people why our programs are a better investment than a one-size-fits-all workout.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Throughout high school, I struggled with my weight and body image. After running a marathon, participating in amateur boxing and going on to train for an Ironman triathlon, I was forced to completely change my mentality in order to successfully improve my general fitness. Starving your body and performing repetitive movement without taking time for things like mobility and soft-tissue work will eventually lead to fatigue, low morale and injury. My goal is to help women and men change the way they look at fitness so they can move forward with a stronger, healthier body and mind-set.
