A backcountry skier on Kendall Mountain, southwest of Silverton, was caught and seriously injured in a small avalanche Tuesday, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said.

A rescue was ongoing for the skier, one of a group that was descending the Rabbit Ears (Arcade) avalanche path, the CAIC said on its website. The skier was washed into a stand of trees.

Officials said the avalanche happened on part of a gully that is below treeline (around 11,000 feet) and faces northwest.
