A Rifle police officer about to make a traffic stop early Wednesday held off when he thought he saw a child had fallen out of the vehicle he was following, only to find the child was really a backpack full of drugs.
As the vehicle sped off, the officer opened the backpack to find it holding almost 200 grams of marijuana, roughly 100 grams of methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms, police said.
The officer was patrolling in a neighborhood in the southeast part of the town at about 1:45 a.m. when he spotted the small car leaving the area with no tail lights, police said.
“As the officer approached to make a traffic stop, something fell out of the car,” police said in a news release. “The officer, thinking it might have been a child, stopped and the car sped away.”
Police Chief John Dyer said they have a description of the vehicle and are searching for suspects in connection with the drug seizure.
Rifle is a small Western Slope town located about 27 miles west of Glenwood Springs off of Interstate 70.
