Re: “Denver water use dips to 40-year low in 2014,” Feb. 10 news story.

Kudos are in order for Denver Water. Its long-standing commitment to water efficiency pays dividends for its customers and Colorado. Notably, Denver Water is using less total water today than it was 40 years ago, despite adding 350,000 more customers. This result is mirrored by other growing Western communities, including Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, and Tempe, Ariz., and demonstrates the tremendous effectiveness of urban water efficiency programs.

Not to rest on its laurels, Denver Water is also promoting an aggressive indoor water use goal for its customers. This goal-setting is crucial for ensuring a reliable water supply while not drying up our world-class rivers. Setting a strong conservation goal, following Denver Water’s lead, should be included in the final drafting of Colorado’s Water Plan.
