Police say a 25-year-old man was killed Sunday night in southwestern Colorado after he jumped on the hood of a woman’s car as he tried to stop her from driving drunk.

Police in Monte Vista said a “domestic disturbance” between the man and woman preceded the crash.

Kendrick Marquez was fatally injured in the wreck, which happened at about 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of 8th and Monroe streets, police said. Investigators say the car struck a tree.

“Marquez was transported from the scene by ambulance the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa and died a short time later,” police said.

Police say Autumn Martinez, 21, was driving the car. Martinez was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

Police say the death remains under investigation.

Monte Vista is located in Rio Grande County about 18 miles west of Alamosa.
