Who said the Class 5A girls Sweet 16 round would be a bunch of blowouts?

In fact, Lakewood and Grandview combined for an epic performance. Ultimately, the host Tigers outlasted the Wolves 86-83.

Lakewood will take a 20-5 record into Friday’s Great 8 at the Denver Coliseum.

The Tigers were able to withstand a fabulous performance by Grandview sophomore Michaela Onyenwere, who scored 43 points, 18 over the final quarter. However, the Tigers and junior McKenna Bishop (35 points) proved to be too much.

CHERRY CREEK 58, GRAND JUNCTION 54


In Greenwood Village, the Bruins, champions of the Centennial League, climbed to 18-7 by getting past the Western Slope Tigers, who ended 19-6.

HIGHLANDS RANCH 64, CASTLE VIEW 53


In Highlands Ranch, the Falcons rode a 28-point performance by Tommi Olson to eliminate the SaberCats. It was the second victory over Castle View for Highlands this season — it won 67-46 in the Continental League on Feb. 17.

Leilah Vigil and Logan Opheim each aded 13 points for the Falcons.

Highlands Ranch is 21-4. Castle View finished 13-13.

THUNDERRIDGE 46, MOUNTAIN VISTA 26


In Highlands Ranch, the Grizzles advanced to 23-2 with a low-scoring whipping of the Golden Eagles.

ThunderRidge, now 23-2, led 16-8 at halftime. Yes, 16-8. Mountain Vista, which fell to ThunderRidge 69-35 in the Continental, ended 15-11.

FAIRVIEW 56, FRUITA MONUMENT 46


In Boulder, the Knights received 17 points each from Annika Lai and Logan in making the Great 8 for the first time in four seasons.

Fairview is 16-10. Fruita Monument ended 15-11.

MONARCH 51, FOSSIL RIDGE 47


In Lousiville, Peyton Carter and Raegen Rohn each went for 12 points and the Coyotes were able to outlast the SaberCats.

Monarch is 23-2. Sally Sroge added 10 points for the Coyotes. The SaberCats, who ended 18-7, also lost to Monarch on 59-42 on Jan. 13.


RALSTON VALLEY 53, RAMPART 41


In Arvada, the Mustangs used 17 points by Ashley Van Sickle to get past the Colorado Springs’ Rams.

Ralston Valley, which also received 12 points by Makena Prey, is 19-6. Rampart, in ending 21-5, was led by Nicea Eliely’s 18 points.
