A man was found dead with his throat slashed and more than 60 knife wounds was sentenced Monday to life in prison plus 54 years.

James Dominguez-Castor, 23, also was found guilty of being a habitual criminal and was sentenced in the aggravated range.

after robbing him and stealing his van, leaving the elderly man’s home ransacked.

Do minguez-Castor was found guilty at the end of a 10-day trial in January. The jury heard how Dominguez-Castor and his co-defendant, Stephvon Atencio, 31, entered Phippen’s home intending to rob him when the murder happened.

Dominguez-Castor knew Phippen casually, having for a short period stayed in the older man’s home, according to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

He was found guilty of counts including first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated motor vehicle theft.

Atencio pleaded guilty in January to charges of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery in the slaying. He was sentenced last month to serve 36 years in prison.
