A Utah man who pointed a handgun at another driver on Interstate 70 last July in an apparent road rage incident was convicted Friday in Eagle County.

“As bad as I- 70 traffic can be, this is not the ‘wild west’ anymore,” said Eagle County District Attorney Bruce Brown.

Dale Smith of Washington, Utah, was convicted of felony menacing, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison. On July 7, 2014, officials said, Smith nearly forced a man driving a rental truck with his wife off the road.

When the truck driver blew his horn, Smith responded by pointing a pistol, as if he was ready to fire. Police was able to find Smith 10 miles down the road and seize his gun.

A sentencing hearing for Smith is scheduled for May 11.
