Class 6A football isn’t coming back to Colorado — at least not in the near future.
A proposal to add an eighth high school football classification for 2016 failed to pass at the Colorado High School Activities Association’s legislative council meeting Thursday in Aurora, according to .
The proposal needed two-thirds of the votes to pass. It received just 23 percent approval.
The proposed Class 6A would have included schools with 1,941 students or more, or programs that were permitted to to play at a higher classification. Colorado had 6A football from 1990-93.
However, there will be the addition of a third classification for three girls sports. Golf, swimming and diving, and tennis will have Class 3A starting in 2016.
