The Pedal the Plains Bicycle Tour will add a new wrinkle this year — a quick visit to Nebraska.

Officials announced that the tour, now in its fourth year, will cross the border and visit the town of Venango, which is about a mile from Colorado.

About 1,200 cyclists are expected to participate in the tour, from Sept. 18 to Sept. 20. The main tour will take a 171-mile route across the state’s northeastern plains, with stops in three host communities — Julesburg, Holyoke and Sterling. For the second straight year, riders will spend Saturday night in Sterling during that town’s Sugar Beet Days festival.

That same Saturday also features the 6-mile Family Fun Ride and the 100-mile Century Ride.

Proceeds from the tour benefit the Denver Post Community Foundation in support of the National FFA Organization and Colorado 4-H. The tour’s presenting partner is Viaero Wireless, joined by founding partners Western Dairy Association, Anadarko Petroleum, Noble Energy, DaVita and Suncor Energy.
