It turns out you weren’t just high every time you thought “Game of Thrones” was referencing the Grateful Dead. The series’ author, George R. R. Martin, that the iconic jam band was inspiration for his writing.

“I’m certainly a fan of the Grateful Dead,” . “I’ve attended Grateful Dead concerts … and I do have Grateful Dead lyrics rattling around in my head all the time.”

Tracks like “Dire Wolf” and “Dark Star” appear in Martin’s writing, and the Weirwood Tree is named after Bob Weir.

“‘Ripple’ is one of my favorite songs of all time,” Martin said. Then quoting the song’s lyrics, “There is a road, no simple highway.”

Perhaps in future books, there will be a scene where Arya gets freaked out while trying to buy a pint of Cherry Garcia ice cream in the supermarket. Or maybe Jon Snow and the White Walkers will settle their differences while listening to all two hours of “Live at the Fillmore East 2-11-69.”

A solo is coming.
