Lucy Dikeou leads the Stanford women’s lacrosse team in goals, but at the same time she’s expanding the sport’s influence.
The former Kent Denver standout scored four goals and had three assists in two games last weekend as Stanford won the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation Tournament played at the University of Denver. Dikeou scored two goals in the championship game, a 16-11 victory over Southern California, which helped advance Stanford to the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
Dikeou was recently named one of 25 candidates for the Tewaaraton Award, lacrosse’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy in college football. She was the only nominee from a team west of the Mississippi.
Asked if she’s blazing new territory, Dikeou said: “I don’t know if I’d go that far. We have a ton of talent on our team. There are more teams and players playing lacrosse in the eastern part of the country, but there are some very good programs out (west) as well.”
Dikeou has a team-leading 43 goals in 17 games and leads her team in almost every major statistical category.
“Being nominated for that award is a huge deal,” said Amy Bokker, Stanford’s coach. “Lucy being nominated doesn’t surprise me. She’s a strong candidate.”
Stanford opens NCAA Tournament play Friday against Florida at the University of North Carolina.
