Denver police are asking the public to be cautious when using ATM machines, saying there has been numerous examples of skimming machines being used in the metro area, including downtown Denver.
“The fraud unit of the department has expressed concern,” said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
“There have been cases of skimmers taking data or cameras recording people’s PIN strokes.”
Jackson said the skimmers, devices made to be affixed to the mouth of an ATM and secretly swipe credit and debit card information when bank customers slip their cards into the machines, have also been recently used at a couple of downtown hotels.
, skimmers were found at three locations at Park Meadows Mall. Earlier this year, skimmers were also found on ATMs near some RTD stations.
“Consumers should be aware if they see something that seems oddly affixed to the machine or if it’s located in an isolated area,” Jackson said.
When coming upon skimmers or suspicious machines, the public is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers 720-913-STOP (7867), or text to: 274637 (CRIMES) then title DMCS & enter your message.
