It’s not easy being one of the best selling rock acts of all time. Just ask Bono. The legendary lead singer of U2 took multiple black eyes over the course of the last year stemming from an act of benevolence () and another of misfortune with a . Over the last couple of months, the iconic rockers took shelter in preparing for their upcoming world tour that includes two dates at Denver’s Pepsi Center.
U2 was scheduled to take a week long residence on “The Tonight Show” in November, however, the band had to cancel as a result of Bono’s cycling accident. Like a good sport, Bono poked fun at the mishap with a skit that includes multiple van and cyclist accidents. In another clip, the whole crew goes undercover as struggling musicians to busk at the 42nd Street station with a performance of “Desire.” Extra points for Jimmy for perfectly executing the role of slimy band manager.
Seeing that the Roots are the house band for Fallon, it was a perfect choice to collaborate with U2 on the “Rattle and Hum” classic “Angel of Harlem” with a stellar horn backed performance. It would be remiss if the guys didn’t plug their latest album, “Songs of Innocence.” On the latest melancholic single, “Song for Someone,” Edge took his Flying V guitar and noodled gently to the backdrop of a shimmery black and white short film that appeared to have been filmed in the industrial park of Commerce City. In an unprecedented third performance of the evening, U2 delivered on their biggest hit of this current century with a thunderous take of “Beautiful Day.” Visibly missing was Bono without his guitar. Maybe his guitar playing days are really over.
