A 51-year-old man died Tuesday night following a fire at an an Englewood apartment complex.

A spokesman for Englewood police said an investigation is underway in the incident, which began at about 8:29 p.m. at 1715 E. Girard Place. Englewood firefighters responded to what was initially an odor investigation, then focused on one unit in the building.

When firemen forced their way through the locked door, the spokesman said, smoke billowed from the apartment, but the fire had apparently put itself out. However, the crew discovered the unidentified man, who was given CPR and was then transported to Swedish Hospital, where he was later pronounced.

The other residents in the building were evacuated and the gas to the unit was shut off. The spokesman said residents were later allowed to return, but the gas had not been turned back on.
