The Larimer County treasurer warned Thursday of a phone scam spreading this week from a caller claiming to be from her office and seeking unpaid taxes.
“In this call, a man tells (the victim) he is from the treasurer’s office and they have not paid their taxes,” the office said in a news release. “The property owner then calls (the treasurer’s office) to confirm we have received their payment.”
Irene Josey, the treasurer, says her main concern is that the imposter may ask for a credit card number.
“The treasurer’s office will never call you and ask for your credit card number to pay your property taxes,” she said in a statement. “We do accept credit cards for payment of property taxes, however we accept them in person, at the front counter or online.”
Officials say residents should not provide callers any personal or credit card information even if the caller ID shows the actual treasurer’s office telephone number.
