Freshman Tanner O’Tremba threw five shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out five, as Cherry Creek beat Grandview 4-1 Saturday morning in an opening game of the Class 5A state baseball tournament at All-City Field.

Catcher Parker Jax had a double and a single and a run-batted-in to lead the Bruins’ attack.

Mountain Vista beat Rock Canyon 3-2 at Metro State in the other Saturday morning Class 5A game.

The 12:30 p.m. games at both sites — Monarch-Chatfield at All-City and Regis Jesuit-Pine Creek at Metro — were in their early stages when suspended by lighting. After long delays, Regis Jesuit defeated Pine Creek 3-2 and Monarch-Chatfield still was in progress as of 4:30 p.m.

The Cherry Creek matchup against the Monarch-Chatfield winner, scheduled for 3 p.m., was postponed until Sunday at 10 a.m. Regis Jesuit’s game against Mountain Vista in the winners’ bracket at Metro went on as scheduled Saturday — albeit a couple of hours late.

The Class 1A championship game between Dove Creek and Granada, scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at All-City Field, was to follow the Monarch-Chatfield game Saturday.
