Heavy rains pounded Interstate 70 on the Eastern Plains Friday evening, and the Colorado State Patrol warned motorists to wat of hydroplaning.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 11:15 p.m. for muc of Kit Carson County and up to 4 inches of rain was reported in spots north of Stratton and Burlington.

At severe thunderstorm warning was issued until 6:15 p.m. for much of Douglas and Elbert counties, including Castle Rock and Franktown. The storm, which could include hail, was headed toward Parker.

Earlier, the National Weather Service warned that Friday afternoon storms in the south metropolitan area, including Douglas, Lincoln and Elbert counties, could be severe.

“Expect heavy rain and hail up to 1 inch in diameter with the stronger storms,” the bulletin said. “The airmass will be more stable further north over the plains with lesser chances for storms.”

A flood warning is in effect for the South Platte River near Weldona in Weld County until Tuesday morning. The warning is also in effect for the South Platte River near Kersey and the Cache La Poudre river near Greeley.

Rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend in Denver, forecasters say.

“Expect showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours, each day through midweek with the best chance for thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening,” weather service forecasters said in a hazardous weather outlook.

Saturday storms could turn “severe,” especially in northern Colorado, and bring with them large hail.

“Locally heavy rainfall Saturday and Sunday could cause minor rises on streams and rivers already running high and fast on the plains,” the outlook said.
