HAYDEN, Colo. (AP) — An airport in northwestern Colorado is getting ready to offer its first flights since heavy rain in May delayed a $16.6-million construction project.
The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports (http://bit.ly/1MVYo1o) Yampa Valley Regional Airport officials gave bicyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers the opportunity to try out the repaved runway on June 14, the day services were originally scheduled to return to the facility.
Airport director Kevin Booth says a wet May caused Grand Junction-based general contractor United Co. to lose about 23 days of work.
Workers still need to repave some taxying pathways and part of the runway, install a new lighting system, and make sure unpaved areas of the property meet FAA gradient standards.
Booth said he fully expects to meet the new reopening deadline of June 25.
