Flood warnings are scattered throughout Colorado on Wednesday evening as heavy rains and snowmelt fill raging rivers, forecaster said.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday for northwestern Pueblo County, southeastern Teller County, southwestern El Paso County and east central Fremont County until 9:30 p.m.
The weather service said a thunderstorm in those areas was producing heavy rain with as much as 1.3 inches falling in 15 minutes in Fremont County.
The South Platte River and the North Fork of the South Platte River from the Jefferson and Park Counties line to Chatfield Reservoir are closed until further notice, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
The river is closed to all recreational use, the sheriff’s office said, and roads are open to local traffic only.
The flood warning for the Cache la Poudre River near Greeley and the South Platte River near Kersey remains as of around 6:15 p.m., the weather service said.
This warning is in effect until late Thursday night or until the stream falls below flood stage, forecasters said.
A flood warning is issued for the next three days along the South Platte River in Jefferson and Douglas Counties, officials said.
The National Weather Service attributed the warning to significant high mountain snowpack runoff caused by warming temperatures.
