Interview with Katie Brown, co-owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Toffee was our hobby. It was something that we made around the holidays and gave away as gifts to our friends and families. People kept telling us that we should go into the candy-making business. After several months of hemming and hawing, we decided to give it a shot.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Melted Sweets Toffee Company is a cottage food business, which means that we make all of our toffee out of our home. We are a family-owned small business that makes toffee for our community. We handcraft each piece of toffee and care about each piece’s quality because we know that our friends and neighbors are the ones purchasing our toffee.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: We love getting out into the community and speaking with locals when we sell at farmers markets and festivals. It’s so much fun being outside and sharing our love of handcrafted candy with everyone. Of course, we also love testing out new flavors and tasting all of our toffee varieties.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The heat. We have to be very careful during the summer to make sure that Melted Sweets’ toffee doesn’t get too melted. We’ve got coolers full of dry ice that keep our product cool at the market. Toffee is traditionally a holiday candy, but we are looking forward to making toffee an affordable, indulgent candy all year long.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We are a brand new company. We’ve only been selling our toffees professionally for about two months. The reception has been amazing so far and we are having an awesome time. We are looking forward to growing our business and providing delicious treats for a long time to come.
