COLORADO SPRINGS — Matthew Talley heard a knock on his window in downtown Colorado Springs as he was using a butter knife to jimmy to life his 1984 Chevrolet Caprice Classic after he lost his keys.

He looked up to see four police officers, guns drawn, surrounding him.

Terrified, Talley put up his hands, opened the car door and stepped out. He was pushed to the ground, handcuffed and frisked, he says. He’s sure it wouldn’t have happened if he were white.

The ACLU of Colorado sent a letter to Colorado Springs police Tuesday asking for an investigation into the May 6 incident on Tejon Street just north of the county’s courthouse, as well as into the apparent failure of officers to write reports about it.
