Re: “Confederate flag taken down in South Carolina after 54 years,” July 11 news story

The Confederate battle flag is officially removed from South Carolina Capitol grounds last Saturday. (The Associated Press)

This headline should give pause to anyone still claiming the South Carolina Capitol’s Confederate flag had anything to do with states’ rights or Southern history. The timing shows the true intent. It was placed relatively recently — early in the civil rights movement — as a belligerent statement against equal rights and dignity for all Americans.
