EL PASO COUNTY — An hours-long standoff Powers Boulevard near the Colorado Springs Airport ended Tuesday evening when a man inside a patrol car shot himself.

The man who slipped out of handcuffs, pulled out a gun and pointed it at his own head while in the back of an El Paso County sheriff’s deputy’s car Tuesday afternoon, forcing the deputy to pull over and flee.

The 33-year-old man was in the back of her car with a gun from about 2:45 to 7:30 p.m., shutting down a stretch of Powers and eastbound Fountain Boulevard.

The man later died, officials said.
