Former Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs, who was cut by Colorado two weeks ago, on Monday signed a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, .
Stubbs, 30, played in two seasons for the Rockies and hit .216 with a .717 slugging percentage this season. The in part to make room for prospects Kyle Parker and Matt McBride.
The Rockies eventually released Stubbs outright — meaning they need to pay him the remainder of his $5.8 million salary. The Rangers signed him to separate, low-cost minor-league deal.
Stubbs struggled at the plate to begin the season. He struck out 30 times in 51 at-bats into May, with a .118 batting average and .
But after , Stubbs hit .324/.820 in the second half.
Athe the Rockies DFA’d him, Stubbs drew interest from the Giants, among other teams. His speed and defensive ability could make him a valuable fourth outfielder in a stretch run.
Stubbs will report to the Triple-A Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League. The Rangers are in second place in the AL West, four games behind the Houston Astros.
