While the NFL and college football are still a couple of weeks away, Colorado high-school play will begin in just a few days.
The odd Zero Week, the extra time slot, a by-product of scheduling problems and a fact of in-state schoolboy life since the late 1990s, will open on Thursday. There will be an all-time high of 42 games, two on Thursday. In a Class 2A nonleague matchup, The Academy will be at Eaton with a kickoff at 4 p.m. Three hours later, Golden will be at Littleton in another nonleaguer, in 4A.
Some of the metropolitan-area heavyweights will be in action on Friday. Defending 5A champion Cherry Creek will be at Heritage in Littleton. Valor Christian will host Bonneville of Idaho and Columbine will be at Fountain-Fort Carson.
The early start will be modified by opening days for all fall sports. Sept. 3 is the first day of Week 1 of football.
