Ever-changing Montbello sports now are known as FNE Warriors, or Far Northeast Warriors.
The once-proud, successful inner-city school that actually was located in its own suburb and had some of its substantial sports teams headed by the likes of Don Gatewood, Ben Gregory and Sayyid Abdal-Rahman, now goes by Denver Center for International Studies at Montbello.
It contains three schools in the building and its football team is fed by nine total surrounding schools, including charter, innovative and alternative.
The Warriors’ new coach is Al Burrell, who has extensive experience, including on the semi-pro level. He teaches a behavior class in the middle school portion of the new school.
Just 1-9 a year ago, Burrell enters the season confident his program will rise.
“I think we’re going to surprise some people,” he said.
The Warriors will compete in the Class 5A Flatirons League.
