Wonder how Kent Denver’s Scott Yates has piled up such an impressive 293-73 record?

One word: Consistency.

The Sun Devils football coach has had only one losing record, his first, in 1981. From there his team has failed to make the playoffs only four times since 1981 (he was a graduate assistant at Arizona State in 1988). And his teams have failed to be ranked at least once during the season only twice, in 1981 and ’82, his first two seasons.

Yes, the 58-year-old has been brilliant with the numbers to back it up. He needs 13 more victories to tie the late, great Pat Panek at 306, who was at Denver East and Machebeuf from 1939-77. Yates’s father, Dick Yates, also coached against Panek.

Few football progams have turned in the consistency of Yates’.
