Autumn might not officially begin until Sept. 23, but Denver residents know that the end of the marks summer’s unofficial departure.

This change of season has many markers in the Mile High City: Crisper days, Bronco fever heating up, the Colorado Rockies once again not within sniffing distance of the post-season, big orange moons rising in the evening sky, and yes — discarded corn dogs and turkey legs in the blocks leading away from the Taste of Colorado festival in Civic Center Park.

This forlorn corn dog languished at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street on Monday. Was it dropped by a child who bewailed his or her loss? Or by a parent whose tummy suddenly didn’t feel so good? Did it later fill the belly of a squirrel or stray dog?

We don’t know, and sadly corn dogs weren’t around when Surely he would have chronicled their seasonal presence along with lambs, cider presses, apples and gourds.

But we do know this: Next year about this time, we shall once again see discarded corn dogs on the streets of Denver. Because that’s how we roll.
