One soldier remains hospitalized and is stable following the that left four Fort Carson soldiers with injuries, officials said.

The removal of the helicopter that was on a routine training mission when it went down in a wooded area of Douglas County begins Thursday and is expected to take about a week, according to a Fort Carson news release.

The helicopter will be cut into pieces, lifted out of the site by a helicopter and taken to a nearby location, where it will then be loaded onto trucks to Fort Carson.

To prevent environmental damage and protect items for further investigation, special attention will be used to recover the fuel cells, engines and other components that could present environmental damage.

“Fort Carson will ensure remediation of the site is done within required guidelines,” the release said. “Any environmental issues will be addressed in an expedient manner.”

The cause of the accident remains under investigation as of Thursday.
