Two people are dead after a single-engine plane crashed Friday morning about seven miles south of Pagosa Springs, authorities say.

The pilot was trying to land on a gravel road but instead crashed into a field, according to Allen Kenitzer, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

The plane, a Beechcraft 35 Bonanza, crashed near U.S. 84 about 10:30 a.m., said Chris Harker, operations manager of Archuleta County Airport at Stevens Field.

The plane was en-route to the Archuleta County Airport when it went down, Harker said. Authorities say there were only two people aboard the plane.

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office says the pair who died in the crash were from “out of state,” but did not elaborate.

“Names are being withheld at this time pending further notification of family,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
