Army officials say a 44-year-old man in Fremont County was a decorated Fort Carson soldier.
Spc. Rafael Munoz-Baez was killed when he wrecked a 2005 Buell XB12S on Colorado 9, the Colorado State Patrol says. Investigators believe Munoz-Diaz was traveling northbound on the highway when he failed to negotiate a curve.
Munoz-Baez, a helicopter mechanic, entered the army in May 2011 and was deployed in Afghanistan from May 2012 until March 2013.
The specialist was the recipient of the Army’s commendation, good conduct and national defense service medals among other awards. He was a member of the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division and originally hailed from Las Vegas, the Mountain Post said.
Munoz-Baez, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the wreck.
