One of the reasons this Colorado team must be so maddening for its fans is that, even as the losses pile up, it is capable of making big plays.

Wide receiver Shay Fields had five catches against Arizona State Saturday night for 103 yards, his first career 100-yard game. He had a 67-yarder that set up a CU touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Devin Ross scored on a 68-yard reception. Tight end Sean Irwin had a 42-yard reception in the first quarter. Sefo Liufau threw for 389 yards, the second-highest total of his career. Colorado had 450 yards of total offense versus 491 for ASU.

“I feel everything is there,” Fields said, “and we just need to execute at a high level and do what needs to be done and everybody just do their role and that’s when it will come together.”

Defensive back Ahkello Witherspoon had an interception for the second week in a row.

“You understand that you have to go out there and make plays and bad things are going to happen,” Witherspoon said. “Obviously you want to put yourself in a better situation to make a play for your team, but sometimes the ball just doesn’t go the right way and you’ve just got to live with it, move on and learn from it.”
