When we settle in to watch our beloved Broncos each week, one burning question always pops up: What kind of music do these guys listen to?
We had to know. So, The Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala asked ten Denver Broncos about the songs and artists that get their horses neighing, or at the very least their speakers rattling. Over the coming weeks, we’ll share their answers and pull them together at the end into one glorious playlist, so you can go all “Eye Of The Tiger” in your next flag football game.
Check out the other players in the Broncos playlist series:
Today, we’ve got:
Nathan Palmer, WR
Favorite artist: Chris Brown
Palmer’s love for music was born and developed in church, starting when he was 8 years old. Now he doesn’t just strap on headphones and listen to R&B. He makes his own music.
A singer and songwriter — he performed four live shows this past offseason and released his latest single “Rings” in mid-August — Palmer has dual loves in football and music. He’s friends with many of the artists he listens to, and has spent time in the studio with Trey Songz and Usher.
Whenever he has a few spare moments away from the Broncos’ facility, Palmer dives into his music, recording, producing a new beat or playing one of four instruments — piano, drums, base and guitar. NaPalm is his stage name.
Analysis:
It’s no surprise that as an artist himself, Palmer included one of his own songs in his top tracks. While “Rings” is by no means cause for Palmer to quit his day job, it’s not bad. The mix of swelling falsetto chorus and fast-rapped verses puts him within shouting range of pop radio’s wheelhouse. The problem is, “Rings” doesn’t do much of interest in that arena, and at best, sounds like an early B.O.B. B-side.
Elsewhere, Palmer gives a nod to, uh, Taylor Swift. It’s hard to imagine listening to “Bad Blood” on anything but the grocery store radio. Maybe it’s a not-so-subtle hint to one of his teammates. (Manning, whatever you did, it’s not worth it.) Good thing he threw in K Camp’s “Comfortable,” which goes far in re-affirming your faith in Palmer’s taste. There’s a Denver Nuggets reference tucked away in the song somewhere, and it features one of the most romantic lyrics of all time: “I’m with all the shit that you like.” Silky smooth.
