The best musicians, like the best people, are weirdos. And when those special few get in front of a computer or a reporter’s microphone, magic happens. Join us as we round up our favorite artist quotes of the week.
Joanna Newsom, off-kilter pop music’s resident harpist
On Spotify and the criminally overrated banana (via ):
“I’ve walked out of grocery stores because I can tell that there’s a banana over-ripening thatap fallen under the produce bins,” she said. “Itap been there for a few days — itap brown and gives off this gas. I can smell it walking in the door.”
Later she was asked about new music technology and replied with an analogy. “Spotify is the banana of the music industry,” she said, sitting at a patio table at a restaurant in the shadow of Scientology’s massive East Hollywood campus. “It just gives off a fume. You can just smell that something’s wrong with it.”
Unbelievably, bananafumes.com is still unregistered. Get going, people.
Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and indefatigable quote machine
After revealing some of his plans for the next ten years (building a pyramid, attending MIT, disappearing and reappearing unpredictably after a long stint–you should really read the whole thing), Jaden does and doesn’t compare himself to Galileo (via ):
I feel like it’s an honor, actually, for people to think I’m crazy. Because they thought Galileo was crazy, too, you know what I’m saying? I don’t think I’m as revolutionary as Galileo, but I don’t think I’m not as revolutionary as Galileo.”
If nothing else, you definitely revolutionized the caricature of celebrity kids. In that way, you are a Galileo to us all.
Dan Deacon, weird electronic music extraordinaire
On finding out he’ll be opening for Miley Cyrus and the Flaming Lips on her Dead Petz tour:
I felt like I was in the ‘Phantom Tollbooth’ when the offer to open the Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz tour came in, but I have a pretty weird life and tend to end up in really bizarre situations that I never in a million years would have pictured. I think it’s safe to say without any doubt that the experience of touring with Miley and the Flaming Lips will be one of the most reality-curving events of my career thus far. Mostly I’m really looking forward to introducing my music and performance to her fans and to watch this show unfold each night.
This pairing makes a surprising amount of sense considering her new direction. If anything, Cyrus might be going for female Dan Deacon in her latest transformation.
