STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A 16-year-old high school quarterback died Tuesday night in an accident on icy roads between Rabbit Ears Pass and Kremmling.

The single-car rollover crash occurred about 10 p.m. near mile marker 160 on U.S. Highway 40, which is about three miles south of the Colorado Highway 14 turnoff to Walden.

Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock identified the boy as . She said Guess was the star quarterback for the West Grand High School football team in the Central 8-man conference.

Guess was driving home from football practice when the crash occurred.

Guess was wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. It was not suspected that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

A 6-foot-3, 201-pound quarterback, Guess was 35-for-80 for 538 yards passing this season with 7 touchdowns. He also rushed for 825 yards and 13 TDs this year, leading West Grand to a 7-1 record (6-0 in conference play).

In his last game on Friday, Oct. 23, Guess ran for 244 yards and 4 TDs on seven carries against Rocky Mountain Lutheran. He also threw for 4 TDs and recorded a sack on defense .
