Independence Pass near Aspen will close Friday for the winter, state transportation officials have announced.
The high-mountain passage between Aspen and Twin Lakes, splitting Pitkin and Lake counties, will shut down at noon, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The pass on Colorado 82 reaches elevations above 12,000 feet and typically opens Memorial Day each year. The route usually closes in the first week of November.
