ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Pitkin County has won the right to set up or improve its own broadband networks after more than 90 percent of voters supported the measure.
Under a 2005 state law, local governments are barred from getting into the broadband business unless voters approve it.
The Aspen Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1MHAsmr ) that on Tuesday a Pitkin County measure to opt out of the bill was successfully by an overwhelming margin.
The county is now free to invest in broadband infrastructure improvements so residents living in rugged terrain and low-population density can receive faster, more reliable service.
County officials say they do not plan to offer broadband service through the county, but instead plan to form a public-private partnership to make sure infrastructure is in place.
