Colorado’s veterans who died in service were honored Tuesday near the state capitol when the governor and military members gathered to read the names of those killed since the 9/11 attacks.

Gov. John Hickenlooper and others gathered at the state’s Veterans Monument, which is in Lincoln Park just west of the capitol. They also honored the 25th anniversary of the monument, which was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1990.

Colorado has more than 400,000 veterans and 15,000 service members.

“The rededication of the Colorado Veterans Monument symbolizes the people of Colorado’s appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our veterans,” Hickenlooper said.

An inscription on the monument reads, “Dedicated by the people of Colorado in gratitude and respect for the men and women who have proudly served and sacrificed in our nation’s armed forces.”
