A group of men who robbed a Lakewood bank before shot a carjacking victim three times even after he gave them his car keys and ran, court records show.
The attackers also shot a 29-year-old woman and punched her mother in the face as they tried to take their car, according to an arrest affidavit.
A Jefferson County judge on Thursday ordered Miguel David Sanders Jr., 28, held on $1 million bail. Authorities say he was on federal probation for armed bank robbery.
Police are searching for two additional suspects in the series of crimes that spanned several miles.
Investigators earlier said they were searching for three men in the case but revised that number Thursday after reviewing surveillance footage.
The FBI believes Sanders and his accomplices are the same people who on Sept. 30 held up another Lakewood bank while Federal agents say the same masks were used during Wednesday’s robbery.
Investigators say the fugitives are probably armed and desperate. None of the injuries they inflicted are life-threatening.
According to information from the affidavit and police, the crimes began about 11 a.m. Wednesday, when the armed men robbed FirstBank in the 1900 block of South Kipling Parkway. The group took $50,000 and assaulted several employees before leaving them in a vault.
The men then fled in a dark-colored Jeep but switched vehicles a few blocks away. They abandoned the second vehicle in the 3200 block of South Vance Street.
From there, the robbers ran about a quarter-mile to the 6800 block of Eldorado Place, where they critically wounded the man outside his home and stole his silver van. He was shot in the chest, stomach and wrist.
Police say the men ditched the van near Sheridan High School. They then approached the mother and daughter outside nearby Sheridan Recreation Center, shot the daughter in the hand and punched the mother.
“The suspects attempted to start the car, but they were unable to since it was equipped with a Breathalyzer,” the affidavit says.
An officer who responded to the scene found Sanders hiding in bushes near where the group tried to steal the second vehicle, police say.
Schools, the recreation center and the municipal center were locked down during the search for the robbers, and all public schools in Sheridan remained closed Thursday.
Schools will reopen Friday, the district said, and will provide counseling to students who sheltered in place for hours Wednesday.
Sanders is being held at the Jefferson County jail on numerous charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping, bank robbery, aggravated armed carjacking, first-degree assault with a weapon and vehicle theft.
Sanders also was accused of attempted murder in 2006, when he was 19.
He was suspected in Denver of two counts each of attempted murder with extreme indifference, first-degree assault and using a weapon during a crime.
Those charges were dismissed.
In 2007, Sanders was charged in Denver with dealing marijuana and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 18 months of probation in that case.
