Wednesday’s Broncos’ practice brought a pleasant surprise. Veteran outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware returned and was an active participant in workouts after missing the last three games with a back injury.
Ware said last week that he wasn’t quite ready to return against New England because he didn’t want to go out there halfway.
During open practice Wednesday, Ware appeared active with little limitations in individual drills.
Ware is second on the team in sacks with 6.5.
Outside linebackers Shaquil Barrett and Shane Ray have performed admirably, but there’s no doubt the Broncos’ will have a stronger defense once Ware is able to return.
Safety T.J. Ward and nose tackle Sylvester Williams both missed practice with ankle injuries suffered against the Patriots.
Both players were seen in a boot using crutches to leave the locker room Sunday night. Neither are expected to play Sunday against San Diego.
Guard Louis Vasquez (groin) was at practice Wednesday, but did not participate during the open period. He left during the first half of Sunday’s game and did not return. Guard Evan Mathis (ankle) did return to practice after being out much of last week. He played Sunday in emergency duty once Vasquez went down.
Quarterback Peyton Manning was not at practice and he is still in a boot. He’s expected to be out of it by the end of the week.
Receiver Cody Latimer also missed practice.
