Re: Mike Coffman, Jared Polis want to abolish the military draft, Feb. 11 news story.
You report that both Democrats and Republicans are in favor of abolishing the draft. This is exactly the wrong decision to take.
Currently the life-and-death cost of America s wars is borne by less than 0.5 percent of the county s population. What America actually needs to do is to move away from a volunteer military and reimpose a draft — with no deferments or exemptions — as the primary source of soldiers.
Ever hear of the phrase chicken hawk and think of people, like Dick Cheney, who got multiple deferments to avoid military service during Vietnam? Or the solid majority of people who support the use of ground troops against the Islamic State — but want some one else to do the fighting?
It has become far too easy for presidents and the public to send America s military forces into action.
If a no deferment, no exemption draft were in place, then people would be far more careful about suggesting multi-generational wars in the Middle East as a viable policy. Especially since there would be a good chance that their daughter or son would be the one who would be fighting it.
