Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener on Thursday said slain Cpl. Nate Carrigan was a “consummate law enforcement professional.”

Carrigan was he and several other deputies tried to evict Martin Wirth, a 58-year-old Occupy Denver activist, from his Bailey home.

“I want to thank the community for their thoughts and prayers,” Wegener said.

Carrigan was a 13-year veteran of the Park County Sheriff’s Office and a high school baseball and football coach.

The sheriff read a statement from Carrigan’s family asking for privacy and that donations go to a scholarship fund at Bank of the West. Information on services for Carrigan hasn’t been announced.

Master Patrol Deputy Kolby Martin, an 11-year veteran of the office, was shot multiple times in the lower extremities and Wegener said Thursday that Martin was in serious condition “but up and around” at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

Capt. Mark Hancock, a 21-year veteran of the office, was shot in the ear but was treated and released.
