A man who had barricaded himself inside a home Wednesday afternoon following a botched carjacking attempt has surrendered, Denver Police announced on Twitter at about 2:35 p.m.

Investigators say the attempted carjacking happened about 11 a.m. on the 1200 block of Mariposa Street.

The intended victim was able to flee, police say, at which point the suspect broke into a nearby occupied home in the 1300 block of Lipan Street.

The occupants were able to escape as SWAT responded.

Earlier, Christine Downs, a police spokeswoman, said negotiators were trying to make contact with the man.

“There were reports that he may have an axe,” Downs said. “It appears he has some kind of weapon.”

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
