CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — A 57-year-old inmate who died after collapsing at the Fremont County Jail was a former correctional officer who was serving a 100-day sentence on sex assault charges.

The Canon City Daily Record reports (http://goo.gl/j90drI ) Gregory Smith, of Colorado Springs, pleaded guilty March 2 to two counts of trying to commit sexual assault. The charges stem from incidents at the Arrowhead Correctional Center, where he had worked for 10 years.

Prosecutors say Smith made sexually harassing comments to inmates and grabbed their genitals. He also was accused of asking to see inmates’ genitals and bringing at least one of them pornography and marijuana.

Smith was working in the kitchen when he collapsed the morning of March 9. Results from his autopsy are pending.
