The Pueblo Zoo on Wednesday announced the birth of two North American river otters. The sibling pups were born March 8, and zookeepers were able to determine one female and one male after preliminary veterinary check-ups.
The otter mother, Freyja, is said to be doing well, the Pueblo Zoo said in a news release. She is a second time mother, previously giving birth to three otter pups in 2014.
The zoo said staff is “giving the new family space,” and said the pups will remain off exhibit in their nesting box for up to eight weeks. Freyja will eventually teach them to swim in a smaller off-exhibit pool before the pups can introduced into the main otter exhibit.
