MINNEAPOLIS — Danton Heinen drew the University of Denver even with powerhouse North Dakota at 6:39 of the third period and the Pioneers played to a 1-1 tie Saturday at the Target Center in the consolation game of the NCHC’s Frozen Faceoff.

The Pioneers, who will enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 6 overall seed, fell behind 1-0 in the first period when North Dakota’s Nick Schmaltz scored against junior goaltender Evan Cowley.

Cowley finished with 26 saves.

Despite being tied in its final conference tournament game, Denver earned a No. 2 regional seed for the NCAA Tournament.

The Pioneers find out which regional they will play in when the NCAA’s “Hockey Selection Show” airs Sunday at 10 a.m. on ESPNU.

DU’s regional will be in one of these cities: Worcester, Mass. (Northeast Regional); Cincinnati (Midwest Regional); Albany, N.Y. (East Regional); or St. Paul, Minn. (West Regional).

The winner of each regional advances to the Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla., on April 7. The national championship game is April 9.
