A protester, center left, and a supporter of Donald Trump scuffle during a campaign rally in Cleveland on March 12. (Michael Henninger, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Re: There s an air of menace about this campaign, March 19 Charles Krauthammer column.

I seldom agree with Charles Krauthammer, but this column was spot-on. As much as I am repelled by Donald Trump, I am even more appalled by those who would hand him a gift-wrapped free-speech issue. To give Trump, who has floated numerous proposals inconsistent with a free society, and by extension his fevered minions, the veneer of persecuted victim, stifled in his political expression, is an astonishing stupidity. He and they are not victims; please don t furnish them with the illusion that they are.

Anti-Trump protesters are shooting themselves — and America — in the foot by increasing the odds of either of two dismal scenarios unfolding. On the one hand, they may be strengthening Trump by outraging Americans who see their First Amendment rights of free speech and assembly being trampled. On the other, with polls indicating that Ted Cruz (unlike Trump) could win over a Democratic candidate, they are paving the way for Cruz to usher in a theocracy. Won t that be fun?

Elie Wiesel has said, We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. The protests against a vacuous demagogue recently in the Midwest and in Tucson, Ariz., have given me hope that America has not lost its moral compass.
