EVANS — About 20 protesters stood outside the Humane Society of Weld County Saturday afternoon, demanding the shelter’s board of directors resign due to an ongoing dispute between the board and shelter employees.

Some employees walked off the job on March 25 in frustration with the management of Executive Director Elaine Hicks, who was placed on a temporary leave for four days in March while the board investigated complaints. Hicks is at the center of those complaints, and some claim she has created a hostile work environment. The protesters said they think it would be best for the shelter, its employees and animals if she and other board members resigned.

Board President Deborah Sergesketter said in a news release Saturday the board took the employees concerns seriously, but made a decision they disagreed with.

“Unfortunately, those employees have resorted to inflammatory unsubstantiated allegations concerning this process and disregarded the numerous improvements achieved. Our organization is and has been in full compliance with all local and federal employment and animal care regulations and audits,” she said in the release.
