A 24-year-old man fell an estimated 70 feet while climbing in Boulder Saturday morning.

The climber, Jamie Shaw of Boulder, was rescued by the Rocky Mountain Fire Protection District and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group. Shaw sustained a “significant injury” to his lower right leg, and several lacerations and abrasions to his body, but was conscious and alert during the rescue.

He was transported to a Denver hospital.

According to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened just before 10:40 a.m. Saturday when Shaw was climbing the Anthill Direct route at the Eldorado Canyon State Park with a friend.

The friend reportedly did not witness the fall initially, but saw Shaw hit the rock face at least once after hearing Shaw yell for help as he fell.

Shaw wore a helmet and was using climbing ropes and a safety harness, according to the news release.
